Mid-America Signs LA Fitness and City Sports for Chicago’s Marshfield Plaza

CHICAGO (March 19, 2009) –  Marshfield Plaza, South Chicago’s new 454,000 square-foot Target-anchored urban power center, has acquired two new retailers, according to Richard Spinell, Principal of Oakbrook Terrace-based Mid-America Asset Management, Inc., the center’s exclusive leasing representative. Recently signed are LA Fitness for a 35,000 square foot anchor space and City Sports for 3,000 square feet.

LA Fitness is anticipating breaking ground in mid-2009 and planning for an early 2010 opening.  Based in Irvine, Calif., LA Fitness lists 10 facilities throughout Illinois, offering state-of-the-art equipment, a cardio area, aerobic classes, pool, Jacuzzi, saunas, racquetball, tennis, basketball, and more. City Sports, who is targeting an August, 2009 opening, is owned by a local operator. There are currently 15 City Sports locations in the Chicagoland area.

Mr. Spinell represented the landlord, Primestor Development of Chicago, in all of the new leases, along with Mid-America Principal Paul Bryant and Senior Leasing Representative Mary Beth Menelli. Dan Tausk and Jeff Kuchman of Mid-America Real Estate Corp. represented LA Fitness, and Kenny Kang of MHK Investments, Inc. represented City Sports.

Marshfield Plaza is located on a 38-acre development at W. 119th Street and S. Marshfield Avenue, adjacent to the I-57 Expressway. Phase II is anchored by PETCO, Jewel-Osco, Staples, Marshalls, and LA Fitness and includes other specialty shops. Phase I, which is 164,688 square feet of the GLA, is comprised of Target, which opened in October 2008, and inline specialty retail. Phase II construction is on schedule, with the center expected to be fully running and occupied by summer 2009.
